What will we do for the project?

Offline Activities

This lesson will take place during a fairy tale/folktale unit. This lesson could be done focusing on one story or with multiple stories.

Students will participate in a read-aloud of a story. We will read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Before reading, we will discuss story elements: beginning, middle, end, characters, and setting. This will have students thinking about the main parts of the story and will help them brainstorm at a later time.

When the story is finished, we will complete a graphic organizer as a class. This can be done using a paper and marker on a chart board, underneath the document camera, or using a flipchart on a Promethean Board. Each student will complete a different letter of the alphabet to describe a connection to the story. For example, if a student was completing "T" they could write, "T is for troll who lives under the bridge." They could illustrate a picture of a troll from the story.

After we completed a few examples as a class, students will create their own brainstorm for their letter. For example, if students received the letter O, they could create a web that says: over (the bridge), oldest goat, etc.

At a later time during another class period, students will choose one of their favorite descriptions of the letter. The students will use Pixie to create their own dictionary page with the letter, sentence, and illustration.

Students will read the story with the class.

Brainstorm ABC pages that could be included in the classroom book about the story.

Complete an individual brainstorm for the letter they received.

Students will present their letter during a book party where they will share their letter.

Once each letter is completed and shared by a student in the class, we can create a classroom book to hold each students' work for the classroom library.
