Difficulties that could be encountered & how to avoid them

Back-up plans

As with any lesson, there is always a chance for the unexpected to happen.  There are some things that we have actually anticipated which may cause difficulty for students when completing this assignment.  Anyone who has ever played the alphabet game or created their own version of an alphabet book knows that there are some letters that are more difficult to connect to a story than others. The teacher could possibly use one of these more difficult letters as the example shown to the class, or even use creative spelling to include all 26 letters.  For example, for the letter x, the teacher can explain that it was the “XL” or eXtra large goat who put the troll in his place.  Another example would be for the letter Q, the teacher could explain that the troll sat Quietly under the bridge until he heard the goat try to cross his bridge.

If students are using Pixie or Wixie to complete this assignment, it is a good idea to have already introduced the program and tools that are available to the studens.  Making sure the students are using computers that have these programs already installed is a great idea to avoid stress at the time of the lesson.

It might also be difficult to reserve the computer lab or cart of laptops when needed.  One suggestion would be to plan ahead and make a reservation as early as possible.  Some students may need to share computers, or take turns completing the assignments.  Some teachers might be able to borrow computers from another classroom.

If Pixie/Wixie is not istalled on the computers, there is a chance that KidPix or another painting program is available.  If not, the students might be able to create their page in Microsoft Word or Publisher using clip art or some other form of copying and pasting internet pictures.   One other suggestion would be to use the students' creations on paper, and scan them to create an online version.
