Curriculum-Related Goals

This project will address Common Core Standard:

  • RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson

Students participating in the project will need to first read the story. Next, they will need to retell the story in order to display their comprehension of the events including key details. They must understand the story in order to create a letter-corresponding word that directly relates to the story's characters, setting, plot, moral, etc. The letter that they create for the webpage will be how they are evaluated on their comprehension and abilities to retell the story.

Technical Needs

The beneficial piece to this particular project is that the technical needs can be addressed in many ways. Some schools have one-to-one devices, and some schools do not. Some schools have computer labs still set up, and some do not. Some schools are limited to any technology until they begin receiving their devices for their students.

The schools that have devices for their students are going to have the “upper hand” on the project. Students will easily be able to log into Pixie or even Wixie to work on their projects when they are ready. The teacher can be around to assess basic technical difficulties, but in all there should not be many problems to address in regards to technology.

The schools with computer labs will have to do a little more planning ahead of time. Labs typically need to be signed up for ahead of time to avoid another class being there when it is needed for you. Therefore, the teacher needs to plan the project ahead of time, signing up for various days in a row (probably two) to allow time for the Wixie or Pixie to be completed.

There is even a way for this to be completed if teachers have no access to technology in their classroom. Students can complete the folktale letter poster on paper with a written sentence, and the teacher can simply take a picture with a smart phone or camera and upload it to the telecollaborative project site. Below is a sample proposal that can be sent to administration regarding technical needs:

Dear Principal,

Frist grade will be participating in a new and valuable telecollaborative project. This project will address Common Core Standard RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. During our folktale unit, we will be reading a wide variety of stories in which students will be required to retell the story and display their comprehension in some way. This new and innovative way of evaluating will connect students with classrooms around the country. Students will each be assigned a letter of the alphabet. After reading and retelling The Three Billy Goats Gruff, students will be required to come up with a word that begins with their assigned letter. This word must correspond with an important aspect of the story. Students will create a sentence and corresponding illustration for their picture using Pixie.

Therefore, there will be some technology that students will need to use. Each first grade classroom will need to have the computer lab during our reading block time for two consecutive days to allow time for this project to be completed, shared, and evaluated. Also, Pixie will need to be installed on each of the computers being used. Know that Pixie will not be used for play or entertainment, it will solely be used to complete the project the first graders have been given.

I hope that you see how extremely beneficial this will be for our young students. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
